Cold Weather Construction Possible With Precast

From how high can you drop an egg onto a concrete floor without breaking it?

Higher than you would think as the structural integrity of a well laid concrete floor renders it virtually indestructible towards an incoming egg, even at terminal velocity.

All (bad) jokes aside, there are many benefits to using precast, especially in the winter months. While winter weather shuts down some parts of the construction industry, precast elements - beams, columns, wall panels, and floor and roof planks - are manufactured and installed year-round.

As precast concrete is cast inside a temperature-controlled plant, it is not impacted by cold winter temperatures, snow, or other elements. Within our plant, we are able to perform quality control checks on not just the concrete batches, but also throughout the manufacturing process. This ensures customers receive the highest quality precast components to their jobsite.

Speaking of the jobsite, Mid-States Concrete installs precast components all year long, even during the wintriest months in the Midwest (subject to extreme temperatures on both the low and high sides). Delivered on site based on the schedule agreed upon between the customer and Mid-States, the use of precast can help contractors enclose their buildings, to allow inside trades to work during the colder months.

Precast concrete is a strong, durable, flexible material that delivers 100-years of service life. Such a building can function at a high level for decades while providing flexibility of use. Precast concrete allows flexibility for redesign or retrofit, so a building can be used for many different purposes and by several owners over many decades. This is possible because a precast concrete shell can be left in place while the building’s interior is updated or renovated.
