Hollowcore: A Versatile Product for Many Purposes
Hollowcore plank is one of the most popular, efficient, and versatile components in the construction industry offering architectural and structural design flexibility.
Typically used in the construction of floors, and sometimes roofs, in multi-family residential, commercial, educational, healthcare, and industrial buildings, one of the huge draws of the products is its long spanning capabilities.
While the design recommendations for span lengths vary slightly from product to product, there are a few general rules to keep in mind, according to the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). If we assume a uniform superimposed load of 100 pounds per square foot and an un-topped system, spans can range up to 50-foot depending on the depth of the plank. Factors such as line loads, concentrated loads and openings can affect the span capabilities of the system.
Benefits of using precast hollowcore plank on bearing wall structure include vibration resistance, easy floor penetrations, finished ceilings and floors, reduced floor-to-floor heights and open clear spans providing more open interior space than with conventional construction.
Hollowcore is inherently fire-resistant, and can achieve a fire rating of up to four-hours, depending on thickness, topping, and strand cover. The product is highly durable and boasts thermal properties which help reduce consumption for heating and cooling of buildings. Hollowcore plank is also highly resistant to changing weather conditions and is efficient in noise reduction, which makes it an ideal noise barrier.
