What are you thankful for?

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is a great opportunity to take a moment and consider all the things we have to give thanks and be grateful for.

First and foremost, I am thankful for my sweetest little boy Allen. He is just a few months away from turning two and although we are in the thick of the terrible toddler stage right now, he is still the best thing I have ever done and what I am most proud of. He will grow out of this, right?!?

Once again, I continue to be so grateful for and so blessed by the people I call family. It is their unwavering support that got me through a year that was tougher than most. I’m grateful for my family’s health and that we are all here to celebrate another Thanksgiving together. And I am extremely thankful that my son has such loving and supportive people on both sides of his family.

I’m grateful for my SQUAD, who despite the miles between us, are always there for each other. Even with our growing families, we still do our best to see each other as often as we can. And I’m thankful for co-workers who have become great friends, too.

Being part of the Mid-States team is something I am continually grateful for. This team is filled with truly amazing people that I am lucky to work with on a daily basis. The amount of care this company has for its team is something I haven’t seen anywhere else.

Finally, I am thankful to know that I have so much to look forward to in the coming year. It will be as good as I make it and I have big plans.

Happy Thanksgiving! In recognition of the holiday, Mid-States will be closed on Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29. May your Thanksgiving be filled with family, friends, and plenty of delicious food!

The Power of Reading

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
— Joseph Addison

About a year ago, Mid-States launched the Leadership Library. The Leadership Library is a collection of books available for anyone on our team to check out and read in their free time. The goal of the library is to encourage our team to read books that would be of value for professional and personal development and provide small monetary compensation for doing so.

One of the favorites among our team is How to Win Friends and Influence People. Here is what some of our readers had to say:

  • “(The most important thing I learned from this book is) to be sincere and genuinely interested in others. Recognize their ability and potential. Give praise and freely demonstrate how that particular individual can reach their potential by showing/telling of your own mistakes and faults, and how you overcame them.”

  • “The author puts a huge emphasis on perspective shifting and empathy. He argues that you not only need to seem like you care, but actually care.”

  • “It was a good read with a lot of different ways you can use to lift others up and put the focus on them instead of always talking about yourself.”

Do you have a suggestion for a book we should add to our library? Drop it in the comments below and we’ll check it out!

What was your favorite Halloween costume?

With Halloween just 10 days away, spooky decorations all over town, and Halloween candy and costumes on display at the front of every store, I’ve grown a little nostalgic.

All of the Halloween preparations have me thinking back to when I was a kid. I remember some of my favorite costumes - a witch, a cheerleader, a hippie (I later incorporated these jeans into my actual wardrobe as bell bottoms, or “flares,” made their comeback that year). I remember all the dads in the neighborhood gathering up the kids to go trick or treating while the moms stayed home to pass out candy and cook the traditional Halloween dinner of frozen pizza. And I remember sorting my candy at the end of the night - it was always quite a haul - and then trading with my brothers so we all got our favorites. Let’s not forget dad’s trick or treat charge, too. He claimed however many Heath bars we got as his fee.

Heath is a seriously underrated candy bar that truly doesn’t get the credit it deserves. I think my lack of Heath as a child has contributed to my love of Heath in adulthood - and yes, I will be claiming my trick or treat fee of Heath bars from my little one this year.

So what about you? What are some of your favorite things about Halloween? What was your favorite Halloween costume ever? Send me a picture at s.mccord@msprecast.com and I’ll add them to this post and share them on social media.
